The little figurines on the roof top are Monkeys. They were protectors of the palace from fire damage.
Yet one of the key Korean landmarks was destroyed by arson in 2008.
There are day long city tours of Seoul which are good. The Subway system in Seoul is pretty good as well. Signs are in English and train routes are color coded.
